Baker has earned four music degrees, including a D.M.A. from the University of Michigan. After teaching organ at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., Baker decided in late 1980 to undertake the huge challenge of becoming a doctor. After taking the prerequisite courses and exams, Baker was admitted to University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, from which he obtained the M.D. degree in 1987. After an internship in Internal Medicine and residence in Dermatology, Baker moved to Austin, Texas in 1991 to practice medicine. In 1996, Baker returned to Dallas to enter the Executive M.B.A. program at Cox School of Business, SMU. He was awarded the M.B.A. degree in May, 1998. Baker is Adjunct Associate Professor of Organ and Associate University Organist at SMU in Dallas, where he teaches service playing and improvisation. He is Organist and Director of Music, University Worship, Perkins Chapel, SMU. Baker practices Dermatology at Mid-Cities Dermatology Clinic in Bedford, and he runs the Dermatology Clinic at SMU Memorial Health Center. In 2000, Baker rejoined the roster of Karen McFarlane Artists. Current recording projects include CDs of the works of Marcel Dupre and Jean Langlais. As a composer, Baker has published organ and choral works for H.T. FitzSimons, Fred Bock Music, and Gentry Publications. Baker lives in Dallas with his wife Marjorie, daughter Paige and son Evan. George Baker is a Dallas native. He has won first prizes by unanimous jury
decisions in several major organ playing competitions: American Guild of
Organists National Competition in Organ Playing (1970), Grand Prix de Chartres
(Chartres, France, 1974), and International Improvisation Competition (Lyon,
France, 1979). His numerous recording credits include the complete organ works
of J.S. Bach (released in 1979) and the complete organ works of Louis Vierne
(world premiere recording, with Pierre Cochereau, released in 1994). He has been
awarded three French Grand Prix du Disque, one of which is for the Vierne set
(1995). His organ teachers have included Robert Anderson, Marie-Claire Alain,
Jean Langlais, Andre Marchal, and Pierre Cochereau.
