Home, for Ken and his wife Jane and daughter Rachel, is the San Francisco Bay area. Earlier Ken studied music therapy Michigan State University where he concentrated heavily on performance skills in piano and voice. Medema music is earthy and direct, full of stories and humor, It utilizes musical styles from classical to rock, from ballad to blues, from sacred to profane--always searching for ways in which people can connect to each other, enabling them to sense the sacred within themselves and in surprising places. Medema appreciates the diverse way in which people express themselves and uses a variety of styles to share his concerns for the planet and its survival, social justice, and people's relationship to spirituality, He finds fulfillment in providing an enabling element for groups whether large or small in dealing with issues which affect their lives. Blind from birth, Medema understands the importance of inclusivity and sensitively seeks to challenge his listeners to dream and work for a world of justice and peace. Ken Medema has been writing and performing his own songs since 1970 when he
began composing original material for his work as a music therapist in a
psychiatric hospital. He is now involved in a full-time performance schedule
that has taken him from the North American Continent and Australia to Africa and
Europe. He is at home with audiences in a large auditorium or a small classroom
circle.
